Skating

The BOSM English Press recently interviewed Devansh Sureka, the Captain of the skating team, to learn more about the team’s preparations for the upcoming sports meet.

Devansh began by explaining the three events that the skating team would participate in during BOSM 2025, namely Roll-Ball, Speed Skating and Relay Racing. Roll-Boll—their main event—was a mix of handball, basketball and skating itself. This year, they expected six to seven outstation teams to participate. In Speed Skating, participants would individually run five laps around a set track, and the fastest time would win. Relay Racing was another time trial event with teams of three, two boys and one girl. They each must complete three laps, and the first team to finish would win. Devansh explained that due to the lack of a proper rink for Speed Skating and Relay Racing, they couldn’t invite outstation participants for these events, and participation would be open to all on the skating team.

Coming back to Roll-Ball, the Captain explained that he had managed to get a coach on board to help them train. They had been preparing under him since August 15, 2025. He explained that Roll-Ball was a sport that focused more on ‘body-control and ball-control’ as compared to Speed Skating and Relay Racing—both timed events—which were focused on ‘body posture.’ The team trained for Roll-Ball every evening from 6 PM to 8:30 PM, and participants interested in the other events would have the opportunity to train for them an hour before that.

When asked if they had faced any hurdles while training for BOSM, Devansh shared that the rain, making the ground slippery, was their major issue. To make up for lost time after cancelling evening training, they practised the next morning.

Devansh stated that last year, they placed third in Roll-Ball with a total of four outstation teams participating in the event. Under a coach this time, he was confident they would place better and was looking forward to competing. He added that they were also expecting a girls’ team to participate this year and was curious to see the avenues this would open for their own girls’ team.

Reflecting on his experience as Captain of the skating team, he recalled how he had invested a multitude of hours into skating and even competed at the National level. Now, as Captain, he had new responsibilities. He called it a wonderful experience and was excited to lead his team in the upcoming fest.

Finally, Devansh encouraged the GBM to try skating as a sport. He said that most individuals stopped skating around middle school and that they could find time to do it again on campus. He also invited them to show up to their events, recalling how the stadium was packed last BOSM. He looked forward to the same this year.
