With the powerlifting team gearing up for BOSM, the BOSM English Press sat down with Abhishek Patil, captain of the team, to discuss their preparation for the latest edition of the fest.
Abhishek revealed that they practised every day from eight to ten in the evening, alongside their coach, who had been training the team for the past five years. He stated that the coach was responsible for deciding each member’s exercise routine and plan of action for the day. He shared that the team had to work out at least five times a week and maintain a strict diet for BOSM.
He added that this year, there would be several categories in the powerlifting event, each one comprising squats, bench presses, and deadlifts. Abhishek was also proud to announce that they would be introducing a girls’ powerlifting team from this year. Their event would be an open competition, with scores given on the overall performance rather than on a particular category.
Speaking about his role as captain, he emphasised that his major responsibility was to make sure that everyone showed up to their gym sessions. Additionally, he made sure that they had proper time to relax and unwind, with the team organising frequent trips to Pizzeria as well. He remarked that conducting mock lifting sessions was another one of their traditions, allowing the players to train and compete among themselves in a fun environment.
Abhishek commented that in recent years, the powerlifting team had performed well in BOSM, with them winning gold in several categories. He further stated that Bennet University and O.P. Jindal University were their primary rivals, but they were confident that they would have the upper hand this year.
Abhishek concluded by encouraging more people to show up for their events. He highlighted that their tournament was going to take place in the SAC main hall this year, compared to previous years when it took place in the gym. He hoped that this would draw a larger audience, and that more BITSians would turn up and cheer for the home team.
