The Oasis English Press sat down with Vaibhav Menon, the Coordinator of Astro Club, to better understand the workings of the club.
Vaibhav described Astro Club as a haven for enthusiasts of anything related to space, including astronomy and stargazing.
For Oasis ‘26, Astro Club was conducting four events. Their flagship event, Night’s Watch, occurred throughout the night, where attendees are given a tour of the night sky. Vaibhav said that the notable parts of the tour were the astrophotography booth, an area where lasers and binoculars were used to show off the stars, and the ‘dome’. When asked for details about the dome, he said he was not going to reveal what happens inside the dome, and that the only way to find out was to show up for the event.
The club also conducted a creative quiz event called Everyone Dies where participants were given an absurd question, with the goal being to give as chaotic an answer as possible. There was also a more standard quiz, Quizzar, where questions were based on sci-fi and pop culture. Although the first round was pen and paper, Vaibhav mentioned that the club was trying to ‘switch it up’ for the second round and was working on delivering a fresh experience this Oasis. The fourth event, Astropixels, was an astrophotography contest conducted online that lasted the entire duration of the fest.Â
Vaibhav said that preparing for the events was an enjoyable experience. Making questions for the quizzes was a fun activity that was given to the freshers to do. He stated that preparation for Night’s Watch also needed to be very thorough, as the ‘great power of having access to the FD-III terrace’ came with the responsibility of seeing the event through without accidents.
With regard to his experience as the Coordinator, Vaibhav commented on the extensive amount of administrative work involved, but felt that it was rewarding overall.
As the interview wrapped up, Vaibhav spoke about Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot, one of his favourite photos. ‘Between the stress of exams, we try to show that none of this really matters, that we are just a little, insignificant dot in the overall universe,’ he said, explaining that it was the essence of what Astro tries to do as a club.
