The half-a-century old Drama Club is back this Oasis. In an interview with the coordinator Durjai Sethi, the English Press found out what the club has planned for this Oasis.
The Drama Club is known for making very intense plays, most of their semester productions are based on complex works. This Oasis, they are competing against other colleges in Stage Play. Albeit different from Street Play, at which the club excels, Durjai is confident that the club will do well.
The rehearsals start around 50 days prior to Oasis, and the number of hours put in in each session keep on increasing. “On the final day, the decisions should not be consciously made – everything that we do should come out as completely natural”, said Durjai, when asked about the level of preparation the club has for the competition. Of course to make sure everything is that efficient and smooth, Drama Club members are doing everything that they can – from having regular rehearsals to playing ‘acting
games’ that improve their general acting skills, they’re making no compromise.
“Oasis is something very important to us. The theme being “counter culture”, it helped us reassure our belief in our play that it would be an unorthodox thing. It would definitely be something that none of the audience have ever, ever seen in their life. I’m sure that the people who watch this play will never be same after they watch it carefully”, said Durjai. For the past two years, the Drama Club has been on a winning streak – bagging third and second place in Oasis 2015 and 2016 respectively. This year too, they have strong hopes of making it to the top spot.
When asked about what he’d like BITSians to know, Durjai said, “It matters a lot when you come and support the performing teams, because the live performance is very different from the rehearsals and it really matters how the audience feeds off on our energy, because it reciprocates and we feed off their energy during the live performance.” On a parting note, he urged BITSians to come support the club in their endeavours this Oasis.
