Street Play, conducted by the Department of Theatre, began at 11:45pm after a 45-minute delay. Contrary to its name, the event was conducted in the FD-II QT instead of on the streets, much to the disappointment of the 1000s that had camped out on Krishna Marg since dawn to witness the spectacle. The event consisted of eleven teams staging extraordinary and daring theatrical performances, often conveying a boring social or moral message. Teams were judged on the content of their story, acting, singing, and the audience’s cheers.
The first team to perform, Pearl Academy, Delhi, staged a play depicting the plight of Indian farmers and the need to protect them. The performance concluded to staggering applause from the audience, who then proceeded to chant the communist manifesto. The team from the Institute of Home Economics, Jaipur performed next. Their act addressed the issue of organ donation, illegal transplants, and other related societal vices. Although the team faced a slight hiccup when one of their performers fell during a stunt involving a lion, a xylophone, and an oblong piece of plywood, the act was received well by the audience.
This was followed by performances by teams from loads of other colleges addressing loads of other social issues – substance abuse, depression, homosexuality, the degradation of nature, overpopulation, higher education, fake news, and the plight of the poor.
As the event drew to a close, the crowd grew restless, having not witnessed a fight yet. The angry mob, judges included, stormed off to the first floor to take part in Speed Scrabble, the best event Oasis 2018 has to offer. As the judges went missing, the results of the competition could not be declared. However, the important thing is that everyone had fun, and that Speed Scrabble was a whopping success once again.
