“Away from the drudgery of everyday existence”. This was how Chaitanya and Raj, the joint coordinators of Poetry Club, described their club. In spite of their considerable workload , they agreed to talk about the club’s plans for OASIS.
The poetry club is a forum on campus that aims to celebrate various literature activities, primarily poetry. The club regularly gets together for reading sessions where they discuss and write poetry as well as brainstorm ideas for various events.
The club is also a major contributor in fests and organizes hugely popular events such as Rap Wars and Purple Prose— both of which are nationwide events. Trials are held in major cities across the country and the finalists come to BITS to compete for the title. Rap Wars has even served as a platform for current stars such as Brodha V, a one-time finalist.
Over the year, the club has succeeded in striking a fine balance between being an art-oriented club and a work-oriented one. Even though they hold various nationwide events, they have still managed to find time to grow on the artistic side as well. The club is in the process of making a newsletter and a blog which will showcase their love for poetry and literature. In short, the club seeks to grow from art.
Chaitanya believes that the poetry scene is tending more towards spoken word. He adds that several organizations are taking this form of poetry to the masses. The growth of rap music in the country further contributes to the spoken word poetry’s popularity.
The coordinators credit the club’s success to their team and juniors and are expecting a good response at OASIS this year.
