BITSMUN

The APOGEE English Press sat down with Adaa Bharadwaj, the Secretary-General of BITSMUN 2022, for a quick talk about the upcoming conference. BITSMUN is one of the oldest college MUNs in the country and will be held on the same weekend as APOGEE.

Usually, BITSMUN is a separate event that does not occur concurrently with any fest, but this year, permissions to hold the MUN were given out quite late—forcing the event to be planned out at the last minute. Due to these late registrations, the major concern the organisers had for this year’s event was regarding the potential turnout. Adaa said that MUN registrations typically open weeks in advance, giving a lot of time for delegates to apply. Despite the registration delay, they expect more than a 100 delegates to arrive for the event.

Five committees will be simulated for this edition of BITSMUN. They are All India Political Parties Meet (AIPPM), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN-UNGA 2), and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Out of these five committees, the agendas for UNHRC and NATO are about the current crisis in Ukraine. According to Adaa, it will be very interesting to hear two different takes on similar topics.

Along with the last minute planning and late registrations, the fact that there has not been any offline event for the past two years has made organising this edition difficult.  However, for Adaa, these difficulties were compensated by the rewarding nature of interacting with the various experienced Executive Board members. The Executive Board members also helped with deciding the agendas for the conference.

BITSMUN hopes to encourage more conversation about recent events among BITSians with the help of the conference. They also hope to sustain its reputed legacy for the generations to come.
