The Department of Lights works for every event that happens in the auditorium. They are not restricted to work for any particular fest unlike most other departments. The department handles all events which require lighting on the stage. The BOSM English Press interviewed Effy John, the coordinator of the Department of Lights, to understand the working of the same.
The Department of Lights comes under the wing of Stage Controls, alongside the Department of Sounds and Backstage. Lights, Sounds, and Backstage collectively work towards ensuring that the events run smoothly and there is little to no delay. The Inauguration is one of the most important events which is handled by Stage Controls. Furthermore, Stage Controls has an important responsibility to ensure that all performances by clubs, such as the Dance Club, Music Club, and Hindi Drama Club, are carried out efficiently.
Stage Controls works in tandem with Audi Force and Controls to handle the logistics of the auditorium. He elaborated on how managing logistics becomes a demanding task. Their other responsibilities included dealing with crowds, especially in major events, along with attending to all the other departments and the chief guests. Effy added that there are also technical issues which the department deals with such as coding for 12–13 hours straight to get the lights working again.
The lighting in the auditorium has been the same for the past 30 years. Effy, thus, proposed bringing new systems which would allow easier access and smoother management of events for the department. He stated that there have been instances when they have had to move 20 switches at a time. He aims to change the system from manual to automatic. The department has been revamping the code which was written in 2006 to control lights. This modification has helped them control lights more efficiently and make the events more enjoyable.
Since Effy is not on campus, all logistics are handled by Kumaraditya Gupta. He stated that currently there are only five members in the department, hence, recruiting new members remains their priority. To conclude, Effy explained the ‘importance of a calm and composed mind in this world of increasing seriousness and irrational insecurities.’ He advised the students that being more punctual and disciplined in their lives would eventually help them progress in life.
