The three joint coordinators of the Mathematics Association—Akshat Gupta, Akshata Khandelwal and Vaidik Sharma—sat down with the Oasis English Press (OEP) for a brief pre-Oasis interview.
The Maths Association recently conducted a pre-Oasis event, Sherlock v Moriarty. It was immensely popular with over 200 teams participating in the post-mid-semester activity. The coordinators were highly satisfied with the event and explained how managing more than 1500 participants had been an amazing experience. Akshat admitted there had been a slight miscommunication during the event which had led to a delay for some participants. He added that managing such a large-scale event had been an invaluable learning opportunity, and promised that their team would use the experience gained in planning future events. Akshata added that an event as popular as Sherlock v Moriarty could happen next year too, and the Maths Association was already looking forward to making it bigger and better.
The Maths Association is open to members of all disciplines and requires all applicants to be open-minded and ready to learn. Akshata explained how the Maths Association gives equal opportunities to all, even the new recruits. Some of them are assigned stalls during fests like APOGEE and Oasis. Akshat said it was not fair to expect freshers to know what to do, and so the Association only expects them to be open to criticism and advice. Besides fests, the Maths Association organizes the AMO—the Annual Mathematics Olympiad—whose question paper is curated by members of the Association themselves.
