The musical celebrations of Oasis have already begun and the Karaoke Club is a big part of them. Keshav Sangwan, the coordinator for the Karaoke Club took time out of his busy schedule and sat down with the Oasis English Press to talk about his experiences preparing for Oasis so far.
For their first-ever Oasis, the Karaoke Club will be hosting two events, one of them being in collaboration with the Chemistry Association. Preparations for the same started in July. Keshav claimed that the club has been hard at work ever since and has improved its singing skills along the way. ‘Game of Tones’ is a pre-fest event which incorporates the theme of this year’s Oasis. It is a game show which tests the participants’ ability to sing and their general music knowledge. ‘It’s like a little treasure hunt,’ remarked Keshav. ‘High on Helium’ is an open-mic event wherein people would be able to purchase Helium balloons from the Chemistry Association and perform whatever they want on stage, with an obligatory goofy voice. The Karaoke Club will be performing alongside it, maintaining the atmosphere of an open mic event. When asked about singing performances with Helium-affected voices, Keshav joked, ‘We want to but we can’t do that.’
Keshav mentioned that since it is the club’s first Oasis, they faced many problems during preparation. He mentioned that it was very chaotic at the beginning as the club members did not understand the logistics or whom to approach. Since the club is not an official Student Union club yet, they do not have equipment of their own. But he added that with the help of the StuCCA and the administration, they were on track to smoothly conduct the events. Keshav recalled the difficulties the club faced to maintain its membership during the Covid period. However, he was happy with how far the club had come, noting how it got to perform in the auditorium. Keshav hoped that the informal jamming sessions performed by the club at Rotunda would get more organised in the future, which would allow the club to grow even more.
Keshav mentioned that he has had a great time being the coordinator of the Karaoke Club. Finally, he wanted BITSians to know that the Karaoke Club promotes passion for music and the willingness to learn.
