Dev Agarwal, Captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team, took some time from his busy schedule to talk to the BOSM English Press about the team’s preparations leading up to BOSM 2023.

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport where players attempt to score points by advancing the disc to the ‘end zone’, through passes to their teammates. The teams take turns playing offense, and the team scoring the most points wins the match.

Dev highlighted that the sport is “self-officiated”, which means that there are no referees and the obligation of upholding the rules is on the players. The team had been following a strict training schedule, practicing for nearly four hours every evening under the supervision of a coach. When asked about the competition they would be facing at BOSM, Dev pointed out that “Hawabaaz”, St. Stephen’s team, had bagged the first position previously in BOSM 2019 as well as BOSM 2022. ‘Last year we got a silver, but this time we’re hoping we can beat them and get the gold,’ he added.

The team currently shares the practice field with the hockey team. The lights on the hockey field fell off during a sandstorm during the summer break and have since not been repaired. Dev expressed displeasure with the Institute, lamenting that ‘such a basic necessity has not been met’.

Talking about his experience as the captain, Dev shared that it had been enriching. He mentioned that it was a really fun sport to practice every day, and seeing the passion and drive within the players gave him hope. Frisbee, being a niche sport, further enhanced the bond between the team.

On a concluding note, he urged the students to come out and support the team, adding that it is ‘fun to watch people diving around and jumping in the air’.
