Junoon is a pre-BOSM sports and cultural event for specially-abled children, organised by NSS every year. The BOSM English Press spoke to Abhishek Khurana and Mahin Patel, the NSS Coordinators, to learn about the event.
Junoon is aimed at providing a platform for the children to showcase their talents. The preparations for Junoon normally consist of forming a database of NGOs based in Pilani and Delhi, inviting the Chief Guests, and handling logistics. Making provisions for recreational activities and sports events is another major aspect of the preparation. The process takes around two months, considering the additional involvement of the Director, the Vice-Chancellor, and other stakeholders.
The organisation of this event involves the close coordination of NSS with the CoSSAC, the SFC, and the major departments of BOSM, regarding accommodation, decoration, and printing.
The primary problem faced by NSS this year revolved around persuading NGOs to travel to a remote location like Pilani. Abhishek attributed the credit for resolving this completely to his juniors, who displayed remarkable levels of persuasiveness and dedication. Despite these efforts, the confirmation of the NGOs was received quite late. The factor that is vital to the smooth functioning of the event is the participation of all the NSS volunteers for these two days, according to Abhishek and Mahin.
When inquired about their experiences as coordinators, Abhishek expressed that he found an interest in the negotiation-oriented aspects of his work. Mahin stated that he understood the reasons behind decisions made by the previous coordinator, that he had questioned as a junior.
In their closing message to BITSians, they emphasised that Junoon is not exclusive to NSS members and encouraged all students to volunteer, as it would be a unique and enriching experience for everyone involved.
