The BOSM English Press sat down with Hardik Sethia, the Coordinator of the Safety and Medical Advisory Council (SMAC), to talk about the functioning of the council in the weeks leading up to BOSM.
SMAC provides medical assistance and handles any injuries that might occur during the fest. Hardik commented that the preparatory work is intensive—ranging from acquiring permissions and managing the inventory to calling the paramedics and setting up the stall. Additionally, SMAC has to coordinate with several other departments. For instance, the Department of Reception and Accommodation (RecnAcc) provides accommodation for visiting paramedics, while any inventory order is placed through BOSM Controls. This year, SMAC is also providing inventory for Junoon.
He explained that they are capable of handling minor injuries at their stall. The paramedics are well-equipped with the necessary inventory to attend to such cases promptly. In the event of an emergency, SMAC keeps stretchers and an ambulance on standby to swiftly transport the injured individual to the Birla Sarvajanik Hospital. The members are also trained to administer basic first-aid, if necessary. Throughout the year, SMAC addresses issues such as removing beehives and linking students with relevant medical authorities.
Talking about his experience as the coordinator, Hardik said, ‘The work feels hectic but it is important.’ He stressed that he has to be available round the clock to respond to any incidents that occur during the fest.
On a concluding note, Hardik urged the students to enjoy the fest, but also take care as to not hurt themselves, especially during professional shows.
