The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer-based test for admission to Indian Institutions to pursue Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programmes. The results for the same were announced on December 21, 2023. Two BITSians: Dhruv Jajoo and Adit Kalbalia aced the examination with a percentile of 99.91 and 99.99 respectively. The English Press Club sat down with them to gain valuable insights about the examination.
Dhruv Jajoo began his CAT preparation in August, several months prior to the exam. Despite not opting for conventional coaching, he dedicated himself to self-study. He supplemented his preparation by coaching videos from IIMs, particularly focusing on his weaker areas. Dhruv emphasized the importance of mock tests, completing an impressive 35 to enhance his test-taking skills and time management.
Facing a unique challenge in the English section due to his engineering background, Dhruv highlighted that CAT primarily tests mental agility and strategic thinking rather than domain-specific knowledge. He stressed the real challenge lies in the subsequent application process, where candidates navigate through college selections and interviews.
Adit Kalbalia, another CAT achiever, showcased a diverse approach to preparation. Starting with a strong emphasis on mock tests, he practiced diligently for 10 weeks, investing substantial time in honing his problem-solving skills. Despite forgoing formal coaching, Adit leveraged resources from esteemed institutions like T.I.M.E., IIMs, and Career Launcher, focusing on their mock test series. He further shared that his schedule demanded efficient time management, as he was on PS during his preparation time.
Drawing from his JEE preparation background, Adit recognized the importance of leveraging strengths to pursue desired career paths. He approached his CAT preparation with a pragmatic mindset, acknowledging the possibility of failure and emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus amidst uncertainties.
Looking ahead, Adit’s aspirations extend beyond CAT success, aiming for a career in investment banking. However, he noted the importance of having a backup plan through placements.
Both Dhruv and Adit’s stories serve as beacons of inspiration for CAT aspirants. Their journeys underscore the importance of a well-rounded preparation strategy, encompassing self-study, rigorous practice, and leveraging available resources to conquer the CAT exam and pave the way for a successful MBA career.
