NSS

The English Press Club recently had a chat with the Coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Satvik Sarode, about their pre-BOSM activities. Satvik talked extensively about Junoon, their annual event for specially-abled children.

Junoon is an initiative that invites participation from specially-abled children across India by collaborating with NGOs. This two-day event offers a platform for these children to engage in sports and recreational activities like origami and painting, and enjoy Junoon Night—featuring performances by cultural and poetry clubs, along with musical acts.

Although there were scheduling conflicts due to the convocation dates not being fixed, Junoon was finalised to be held on September 14th. This year, 96 children were expected to participate. Satvik noted that the event organised in the year prior saw 127 participants, but fewer participants were invited this year due to the short notice of finalised dates. Junoon’s campus tour event also had to be cancelled.

A key highlight this year would be Chief Guest Rakesh Bhaira, a Paralympian who won a bronze medal in the Men’s 1500m-T46 event at the Asian Para Games. Past guests have included Paralympians and Padma Shri awardees, who serve as an inspiration to the children. A dinner with the BITS Pilani director at VFast would conclude the event.

The coordinator mentioned that while organising could be hectic, the event promised to run smoothly with around 50–60 volunteers and strong support from CoSSAc.  From running Junoon, Satvik recounted that he has learned to think from the other side’s perspective when negotiating with them and working towards a compromise, making goals easier to achieve.

The Junoon team encouraged all Bitsians to attend at least one event; adding that those interested in volunteering would receive certificates, even if they were not part of NSS.
