With the Students’ Union Elections fast approaching, the English Press Club sat down with Apoorv Singh, a third-year Computer Science Engineering student from Noida, who is contesting for the post of General Secretary.
Apoorv stated that he has been closely involved with the Students’ Union (SU) for a very long time—joining the Core Committee in his first year and later serving as the Hostel representative for Vishwakarma Bhawan. Having worked under the previous President and General Secretary, he said that the experience had given him insights into the functioning of the Union Council (UC). He claimed that his experience makes him credible enough to stand for the position.
‘If I could make things better for one bhawan, I can do the same across campus,’ Apoorv claimed, citing the completion of ten out of fourteen points from his hostel manifesto. He stressed that a Student Representative should be someone who listens to the students and supports them, and he expressed his capability to be that person.
Among his key promises is the establishment of an optical store on campus, an idea he said he had discussed with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). He felt that rushing to stores far away from the campus is ‘a major issue’ for the people on campus who wear spectacles. Apoorv said that another initiative on his manifesto, “Light-Up Nights,” had been inspired by the Chief Warden. These were meant to alleviate the mental stress of the students.
His statement of purpose (SOP) also highlights past initiatives he claims to have spearheaded. He clarified that these initiatives were ones he had led throughout his time on campus, not just as the VK Bhawan representative. Apoorv claimed that he personally pushed for TOTT’s delivery service, initiated the pre-compre talks with help from a fellow ExComm member, oversaw the successful printing service, and organised last semester’s Holi event—his ‘greatest achievement’ so far.
As the interview wound down, Apoorv said that anyone who feels like collective effort could make a change should vote for him, along with those who want a representative who would cater to the needs of anyone present on campus. He said that if he gets elected, people are going to see the changes very soon.
