ALGAE: THE FUTURE SAVIOR

Harshita Verma

Abstract – Algae are photoautotrophic eukaryotes which means they are capable of making food, fuel, oxygen, and everything else which is needed by human for a sustainable life on Earth. Some studies say that they will be the future saviors for humans on Earth. Moreover, it can also become a tool used to save the environment. This paper will highlight the diverse uses of algae and how they came into picture as a
savior of human life. Algae are an alternative to liquid fossil fuels that use algae as their source of energy-rich oils. Fossil fuels were formed many years ago and are not renewable. Today, over 80% of the energy we use comes from the fossil fuels. About 98% of carbon emissions result from their combustion. An alga has high lipid content and fast growth rate and it also consumes CO 2 and produces O 2 which helps in maintaining the proportion of atmospheric gases. They contribute to about 50% of the Earth’s atmospheric oxygen. Seaweeds (a form of algae) have long been used as a source of food, especially in some parts of Asia. Algae are rich in nutrients and because they require very little land to produce the same amount nutrients as produced by crops in acres of land, indicating that algae are efficient.
