Athletics (Boys)- Sai Tarun

With BOSM right around the corner, the BOSM English Press sat down with Sai Tarun, the Captain of the Boys’ Athletics Team for a quick chat to shed light on the team’s preparations and aspirations for the fest.

In BOSM, Athletics is assorted into three main categories, namely running, jumping, and throwing. The running events are further split down into short distances (100m, 200m, and 400m), middle distances (800m to 1500m), and long distances (3km to 5km). The jumping events include long jump, high jump, triple jump, and the throwing events mainly comprise of javelin throw and shot put. Tarun made it a point to mention that discus throw has been omitted from BOSM this year. Moreover, there are relay events to be held for both boys and girls alike.

He stated that the training regimen is different for each of the events, with throwing mainly focusing on building muscle, technique, and strength, so they usually train in the morning, or before the running team shows up on the field. Tarun cited issues with the weather, describing it as ‘unpredictable’ as the rains have been ruining the ground they practice on. He remarked how hectic it was to secure last-minute slots at the SAC gym and even if they did, the gym would always be crowded and unable to accommodate the entire team. He mentioned that the Athletics Team has always shown incredible performances during various competitions, especially those held on the home turf. He hoped that they would uphold the legacy of the team this BOSM as well.

When questioned about their recruitments, he stated that the process stretches over a span of two to three days. He mentioned that the first batch of qualifying juniors are taken in under probation and have a chance of being removed if they don’t attend practice regularly, even if they have potential for growth. He also applauded their latest additions to the team, commending their dedication and swift improvement over the past month.

Tarun claimed that while he has barely had any interactions with the CoSSAc, the Institute had always posed a challenge to him when it came to his academic-sport life balance. When asked about his past achievements in the sport, he mentioned that he won the bronze medal in the very first event he participated in as a BITSian during InterBits, and also managed to secure two bronze medals in one of the previous editions of BOSM.

Lastly, he thanked the general body for always showing up to their events and cheering the team on, and hoped to see them on the field again soon.
