Athletics (Boys) – Shaurya Bhardwaj

Athletics comprises several individual events on the track or the field, forming a significant part of BOSM.

In BOSM, athletics is classified into three broad categories—running, jumping, and throwing. The running events consist of short distances (100m, 200m, and 400m) and long distances (800m to 5km). Throwing events include shot put, discus and javelin while the jumping events comprise the long jump and triple jump. The running events are held in heats, and the eight fastest athletes from the heats reach the finals. The throwing and jumping events have just one session each, and winners are selected based on the furthest distance. As per the rules laid out for BOSM, only two participants are allowed per event from a single college, and each participant can participate in a maximum of three events.

The captain of the BITS athletics team, Shaurya Bharadwaj, informed the BOSM English Press, that the team starts training at 6 PM everyday. The team follows various routines targeting different areas, such as strength, and endurance, on different days. The team also conducts morning gym sessions to work on their strength. On being asked if the team had made any BOSM-specific changes, Shaurya said that the training remained similar for the most part, barring an increase in the intensity. The team members have also abstained from junk food.

Talking about the problems faced by the team, Shaurya mentioned that time constraints were hardly a problem because athletics is not a team sport. Every member is free to train according to their own convenience. The lack of proper equipment, however, has been a hindrance. The team members have not been provided with the right gear, even the captain had to settle for a smaller pair of shoe spikes.

The recruitment process for the Athletics team has not seen any significant change compared to the previous iterations, approximately 20 people were recruited from the 2021 batch.

Shaurya Bharadwaj has won four gold medals in athletics in the last iteration of BPL, a medal in basketball, and five medals in the recent outstation tournament held at IIT Delhi.

He had initially joined the basketball team and had also been selected for the cricket team. However, he chose to pursue athletics as it was less time-consuming, focused more on fitness than technique, and rewarded individual excellence more than cricket and basketball. On a concluding note, Shaurya seemed confident in the team and his performance in the upcoming BOSM.
