With BOSM right around the corner, the BOSM English Press sat down to chat with Tanushi Garg, the Captain of the Girls’ Athletics team.
In BOSM, athletics is classified into three categories: running, jumping, and throwing. The running events consist of short distances (100m, 200m, and 400m) and long distances (800m to 5km). Throwing events include shot put, discus, and javelin while jumping events comprise the long jump and triple jump. There are also relays like girls’ relays, boys’ relays, and mixed relays (100m to 400m).
Tanushi said that the team practices happened mostly in the evenings, which were rigorous and consisted of different kinds of workouts for each day, depending on the intensity of the previous day. She mentioned that for short distances, the runners focused mainly on increasing their speed, and for long distances, the training mainly included stamina building and endurance. She also continued to say that each event had a specific workout that the team focused on.
Reflecting on last year’s remarkable performance in BOSM, Tanushi mentioned that the team had won over 60 medals. However, this year the team was facing constant challenges like injuries and a shortage of team members as they had not been able to recruit a lot of people. She felt that training and preparation were going well, but said that it could be better.
She stated that this year’s recruitment process was different, wherein the recruits were asked to come and join the team practice, and after taking note of their times and regularity for a week, the decision was taken to recruit them.
According to Tanushi, injuries had been a major setback for the team, affecting regularity and motivation. She believed that a larger, more dedicated team could boost the overall performance. Despite the hurdles, her passion for athletics and the close-knit team spirit kept her motivated as a captain.
Finally, Tanushi emphasized the importance of consistency and dedication in her three-year journey as a part of the team. She also said that improvement takes time, but the determination to keep going, especially on the hard days, is what is crucial for an athlete.
