With Oasis ’26 just around the corner, the Oasis English Press sat down with Nikhil Tallam, the Coordinator of BITSCare to know more about the inner workings of the club, what it stands for, and their plans for the upcoming fest.
Nikhil explained that BITSCare was one of the only communities on campus that promoted animal welfare. The club mainly took care of animals like dogs, cats, squirrels, and birds. He also noted that they organised vaccination and sterilisation drives for the dogs on campus.
For Oasis, Nikhil said that they would be organising an event—Dog Watch, in which the participants would get a chance to photograph various dogs wearing different coloured collars. He expressed great enthusiasm in organising this event and when asked how they came up with the idea, Nikhil answered—‘We just wanted to make it fun for the dogs and help people understand that they can enjoy being around them’. They had not faced any problems with getting the necessary requirements for the event, as they only needed collars and dog treats.
Nikhil highlighted that they were facing problems with the administration, as they were denying their request to vaccinate dogs on campus. However, he stated that they were working towards a solution and they had planned to reach out to alumni who are interested, and to various NGOs for vaccinations and sterilisations.
When asked what one should do if they see an animal injured or distressed, Nikhil stated that any incident usually should be reported at the earliest, since the club has a lot of members. The club would also post a mail and put up posters, giving a list of contacts to reach out to in this situation.
Nikhil stated that his experience as Coordinator had been fun and memorable, though exhausting. He concluded by encouraging everyone to attend the event, have fun with the animals and enjoy the fest.
