Candidate Interview: Garvit Krishnia

The EPC sat down with Garvit Krishnia, one of the three Presidential candidates for the upcoming Students’ Union elections, for a short interview.

Hailing from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, Garvit is a third-year student pursuing Civil Engineering. When asked about his previous experience within the Students’ Union, Garvit stated that he was the Hostel Sports Representative of SR Bhawan in his first year. In his second year, Garvit was the Hostel Representative of Vyas Bhawan and a Union Council member.

Garvit mentioned that his journey in the Sports Union and Students’ Union began after he faced multiple problems in his first year, and was unable to do anything about it. He stated that he believed he could bring awareness to these issues if he contested for a position of responsibility. Thus, he contested for the position of Hostel Sports Representative in his first year. He remarked that he had a positive experience, and therefore decided to contest for the position of the Hostel Representative of Vyas Bhawan in his second year. Garvit claimed that people found him approachable and referred to him as reliable and accountable. Hence, he said that he decided to use his two-year experience to contest for the post of President of the Students’ Union in his third year. When asked about why he chose to contest for the position of President over that of the General Secretary, Garvit replied that while working in the Students’ Union last year, he witnessed the work of the President and the General Secretary first-hand. Garvit commented that he found himself better suited and was more confident about fulfilling the duties of the President, hence he decided to stand for the position of President of the Students’ Union.

Garvit brought up some of the initiatives that he had introduced previously. He mentioned that he was responsible for starting the ‘Freshers’ Premier League’ event in his first year, which has now become an official event of the Sports Union. He further stated that, as the Hostel Representative of Vyas Bhawan, he was responsible for the construction of the volleyball court and installation of the soap dispensers, among other things. Garvit added that as a member of the Union Council, he was involved with multiple initiatives like the printing service, the suit service, and the courier service. He mentioned that he was also the SU representative for the ‘Diwali Milan’ that was held. Additionally, he mentioned that during Oasis 23’, he was the point of contact between the Students’ Union and the Department of Sponsorship and Marketing.

Garvit then spoke about his manifesto and his plans for the institute if he were to be elected to the post of President. Garvit claimed that according to him, the most crucial aspect of his manifesto was related to the medical facilities. He stated that he wanted the pharmacy to be open all day and for the facility for UPI payments to be provided. He added that he wanted better quality equipment and better medical facilities for the institute. Garvit stated that another key aspect of his manifesto was to reduce the number of discrepancies and to maximise transparency amongst the GBM. He mentioned that his goal is for the GBM to gain trust in the Students’ Union once again. Another point that Garvit brought up was regarding the miscalculation of fares while using the SU cab service. Garvit claimed that he would rectify this issue by utilising the Google maps API to ensure the appropriate calculation of fares. Garvit stated that he has tried to keep his manifesto as generic as he could and that it may not appear to be very appealing. He stated that this was intentional, because he wanted to focus on the issues that already exist, instead of making fancy promises. He reiterated that his goal was to solve the currently existing problems on campus before trying to introduce more luxuries.

On a parting note, Garvit urged the GBM to cast their votes. He emphasised that it was the GBM’s right to cast their votes and to choose our leaders wisely. He requested the GBM to listen to every candidate and to read their manifestos and SOPs. Garvit concluded the interview by stating that if the GBM voted for him in the upcoming elections, he would make every vote count.
