Dance Club

With Oasis just a few days away, the Dance Club has been going about their prep work in full swing, with work sessions lasting up to six hours a day. Despite the intense work sessions, Sahib Aggarwal, the co-ordinator of Dance Club, managed to take some time out to talk to the Oasis English Press.

The Dance club is organizing two events this Oasis—Razmatazz and Desert Duel. Razmatazz is a group dance competition designed to test artistry in coordinated group choreographies. It comprises three rounds—The Showcase, in which each team will be required to perform their pre-rehearsed acts; Footloose, which is designed to test how well the participants are able to adapt to the changing tracks; and The Prop round, in which each team will be required to build their acts based on a prop assigned to them. Desert Duel, on the other hand, is a solo dance competition in which the participants are free to showcase their talents in a variety of dance forms—from western to classical, hip-hop and Bollywood.

In the weeks leading up to Oasis, a majority of the work undertaken by the club is related to arranging music and props for all the teams taking part in the two events. PCR is a key partner and is instrumental in shortlisting teams based on their video entries. The club is also associated with Backstage, Lights and ADP, all of which have a role in the setup. Apart from this, many members of the club, including the coordinator, are participants in both events.

Talking about how the Dance Club has evolved over the years, Sahib reflects on how they have developed a fine understanding on portraying themes and storylines through dance. Even with this year’s theme for Oasis—Neon Noir, conscious efforts are being made on their part to choose props and tracks which would reflect the theme effectively.

Talking about his experience as a coordinator, Sahib says that it is because of the bond that they share as a unit, that the responsibility that comes with leading a group of more than fifty did not overwhelm him as much as he might have expected. On a parting note, Sahib urges BITSians to come out and cheer the Dance Club to victories in both their events.
