With the fest right around the corner, the BOSM English Press decided to sit down with Yug Sachdeva, the Coordinator of the Department of Legacy, to understand their responsibilities and preparations.

Yug began by explaining that the Department of Legacy is responsible for reaching out to BITS alumni and raising funds and donations for the fests. They were currently a probationary department, which stood to be promoted to minor—if their motion passed in the upcoming BOSM Review Meet (BRM). He added that the department had also hosted the SAC Party as a ‘side hustle’, but had decided to discontinue it and divert all their focus to ‘fund collections’ from the alumni. The SAC Party, not entirely cancelled, was now the responsibility of another organisation.

The demography of the Department of Legacy consisted of students from the second year and above, owing to the fact that they were unable to interact with the potential new recruits due to the fest workload. To avoid burnout, the department followed a clear division of work—sophomores reached out to the alumni, whereas the juniors were in constant touch with the Alumni Relations Division, the Sports Financial Committee, and the CoSSAcns. He complimented his team as they had contributed to the department’s preparation while also juggling their academics. Yug also talked about a database of alumni which they had maintained and updated for the last 4 years, and had proven to be an extremely useful tool.

Talking about the challenges they faced, Yug mentioned that not all alumni wished to donate towards the fest, and some of them displayed an interest in contributing to the college in a different manner. He further added that though their successful ‘conversion rate’ leaned toward the lower side, there were some really wonderful alumni who were willing to pitch in.

Yug then expressed gratitude toward the Sports Secretary, the CoSSAc, the Alumni Relations Division, and the SFC for their cooperation and support. He added that a common misconception about the Department of Legacy is that they were a ‘party’ hosting organisation, which had arisen due to the nature of the department’s work being primarily in the backend of things and often going unnoticed. 

For his final remarks, Yug asked all the students to enjoy the fest, mentioning that it would prove to be a memorable experience for them, creating moments that they would cherish when looking back 10–15 years down the line. He also requested the alumni to actively contribute towards the fest.
