Department of Lights

The APOGEE English Press approached Anirudh Subramanian to have a few words with him regarding his role as coordinator of the Department of Lights. The Department of Lights is elemental to all events held in the main auditorium, playing a vital supporting role along with Sounds and Backstage, all three coming under the wing of Stage Controls. Their work is year-round, in and out of fests, pertaining to all events held in the auditorium.

When asked about how a year’s worth of events and shows will make this APOGEE different from last year’s, Anirudh shared, ‘Previous APOGEE, a lot of clubs had technical debt where quite a lot of the knowledge transfer was lost. But now people have had the opportunity to rebuild this knowledge.’

Currently, the Department of Lights is coordinating and rehearsing with the Dance Club and the Mime Club, as they are performing in the fest’s inauguration ceremony. When asked about the Department’s history, Anirudh shared that although the department was formed sometime in the 1980s, it has existed in some form since the college was formed.

Department seniors described the department as ‘one flowing conversation where the context changed’, and Anirudh’s time as coordinator has been a proof of that. According to him, it was a repeat of what they had done in the past with others as coordinators. The Founder’s Day preparations gave him a personal and in-depth knowledge of the work and workings of the department before APOGEE.

He urged the students to enjoy APOGEE, stating that ‘there are going to be a lot more technical events than last time’.
