ELAS

Consisting of around twenty-five members who have all been described by one member as “handsome and very promiscuous”, the English Language Activities Society also known as ELAS conducts some of the most popular events of Oasis. Before the interview, Naveen Unnikrishnan, their coordinator was hard at work, applying his engineering knowledge to create buzzers that would replace the club’s malfunctioning ones, a testament to his sincerity.

Every year ELAS conducts four events: The Oasis Quiz, Theme Quiz, Wordstock and Speed Scrabble. The Oasis Quiz which sees hundreds of participants each year is, according to one member, a delight to take part in as women attend and because both participants and quizmasters are usually drunk during the event. Kushan Patel who came for APOGEE 2017 is returning as this year’s quizmaster for this iteration of the quiz. The Theme Quiz, as the name suggests is based on the theme of the fest and is prepared and hosted by ELAS members, whereas Wordstock and Speed Scrabble are literary events.

This year in addition to the events that ELAS usually holds, they have taken the extra responsibility of hosting the Entertainment Quiz which will be in collaboration with the department of Informalz and the Music Quiz which used to be conducted by ARBITS.

While discussing the division of work Naveen mentioned that in ELAS the members volunteer to take up work. The first years also have an important role in the club’s work as opposed to just performing the bulk of the manual work which is often the case with other departments and clubs.

To increase participation in their events and to get more entries for the literary magazine (which is not ELAS’s responsibility) Naveen has announced that he would be giving ten extra points for all those who show up for the quizzes with their submissions for Cactus Flower. When asked for their opinions on this decision, the other members started discussing the possibility of impeaching him.
