Extropy

Extropy 2019 was the 3rd edition of the annual Chemical Engineering Symposium and was organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering. It spanned over 3 days from the 1st to 3rd of February, and featured a number of talks, workshops, events, and food stall vendors.

The symposium was inaugurated on February 1st, followed by a talk by Abhishek Sinha, CEO of Good Dot and an ex-IRS officer. Day 2 of the fest featured Aurora, a science exhibition by students of Pilani schools, and Blitzkrieg, a quiz event. The day concluded with Chemhunt, a chemistry themed treasure hunt. The event, conducted in the evening in M-Lawns through the workshop and library, and concluding in FD-2, was immensely popular.

The major events of Day 3 were the Extropy Debate and a Natural Process Design Challenge. MATLAB and ANSYS Workshops were conducted on Days 2 and 3, which witnessed good turnouts. Apart from these, ancillary events were conducted across all three days. ChemCharades was an element-guessing variant of Pictionary, Scrapyard had contestants creating technical devices from junk, and Angels & Demons was a worldbuilding event where participants had to combine elements to create their universes.

The food stalls had been set up with great difficulty, and at one point, had almost been scrapped by the organisers. Initially, external vendors had been contracted, but large-scale confusion with the mediator resulted in them backing out at the last minute. Finally, after another incident which involved resolving some miscommunication with the administration, the stalls were set up in time for the fest. However, when they were finally set-up, they witnessed moderate to heavy footfall. The Chemical Department deemed the overall event to be a success, and this view was reflected by much of the audience and participant body.
