Daniel Bernoulli, a swiss mathematician and physicist (who belonged to the famous and overacheiving Bernoulli family, no doubt) was born. This man is knows for his contributions towards fluid mechanics.

Jules Gabriel Verne, the celebrated novelist is born. This was the man that took science fiction to new and vast frontiers.

A calculator patent is filed for the Automatic Sequence Control Calculator, commonly known as the Harvard Mark I, an early computer. The Mark I was a huge electro-mechanical computer that could perform the four basic arithmetic functions and handle 23 decimal places. A multiplication took about five seconds, though.

The first full color television program in the world, publicly advertised, is broadcast in Mexico City by XHGC-TV, Channel 5, due to technical breakthrough advances made by Mexican engineer Guillermo González Camarena.
