First Few Days at BITS Pilani

Things to do in Pilani during your first few days here (outside of undergoing the admission procedure, going to your room, and generally feeling confused)

  • You’ll probably be quite free during your first few days, so it’s highly advisable to explore the campus.
  • Check out the different eateries in and around campus. This comes handy when you get tired of mess food.
  • Socialize with your wingmates, you’ll have to be with them for quite some time.
  • Stay hydrated. The weather is hot, there is a considerable amount of walking, and even more talking (if you’re open to the great tradition of senior-junior interactions).
  • Keep cash about your person, though not for food — seniors at interactions will make sure your stomach remains full.
  • Take a photo with your family at the clock tower. Make sure it looks good enough to be not only yours but your family’s Facebook profile picture till you get your first semester CGPA in January.
  • Admire the library. Marvel at the surreal LAN speeds, surf the library’s endless collection of biographies of Japanese daimyos of the Sengoku period. Embrace the nerd within you.
  •  You may or may not need a cycle if you occupy any hostel other than Meera. However, if you ever happen to be a resident of Meera Bhawan, it is strongly advised by the CMO of BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus that there be a bicycle.
  • Decide how you want your clothes to be cleaned (provided you’re not a member of the mythical BITSian species that prefers doing their own laundry). You could take the Laundromat service, or sponsor local small businesses by paying washermen to do the same job for a third of the price.
  • Get lots of cheap pens. The collection of stationary items on your person is bound to thin out because of reasons that are usually outside of your control. Freeloaders. We’re talking about freeloaders.

1. The time it takes for this to happen is highly variable and differs from person to person- A study conducted by Stanford^ in 2006 found that there is extremely high variance in the number of time students took to flip over their mess food plates {figuratively, of course} and decided to visit a redi. The study also says that the time it takes for a student to do that  has an upper bound of about 2π weeks. I’m not going to give you a source, or any means to actually confirm this not-at-all dodgy claim.

2. Depending on your personality, you might experience different levels of animosity for the fellow occupants of your wing. While some end up thinking of them as being no less than family, there are those who consider the human imagination incapable of designing a punishment in hell fit for them.

3.  Pro tip- Remember every hostel on campus, the meaning behind the alphanumeric string on your ID Number. and every programme that this campus of this eminent university offers. No specific reason, it’s just useful information.
