Girls’ Basketball: SRCC vs. IGIPESS

SRCC beat IGIPESS 35-34 in what was a very competitive match. While IGIPESS seemed stronger at the outset, it was SRCC’s defense that made the difference.

The first quarter was slow for SRCC and saw IGIPESS take the lead. There was a lot of enthusiasm and students from both the squads could be seen encouraging the players on the court. The end of the quarter saw Kajal from IGI scoring a basket almost unopposed.

The second quarter was better for SRCC. Led by Nainika they showed great coordination and scored another basket just before the break, much to the delight of the crowd. Apart from the players, the coach from SRCC was also very vocal, egging the players on. There was some confusion between the coach from SRCC and one of the referees upon the number of fouls, towards the end of the quarter. However, the referee’s decision prevailed and IGI was granted a free throw.

The third quarter began with Nainika, scoring a three pointer, which drew applause from both the spectators and the players. The score was now 22-14 in favour of IGI. Things started changing when SRCC was awarded a total of three free throws in a span of four minutes. They took advantage of this opportunity and converted all three.

At the start of the final quarter, the scores were 26-22 in favour of IGI. This quarter witnessed a lot of fouls and free throws. SRCC had picked up momentum in the previous quarter but IGI was still at an advantage. The balance tipped in favour of SRCC when they were awarded four points for a basket from outside the three-pointer arc. After a few quick baskets, the scores were tied at 28 point apiece. Two more free throws were awarded to IGI, much to the dismay of opposing team’s coach. They failed to score on both attempts. The game went on with both teams trying their best to score. The score was 28-30, with SRCC taking the lead, and after a brief timeout, IGI were quick to equalise and bring the scores to 32-32. 

After the break Ruchi from IGI scored another basket, the score now was 34-33.IGI had almost won their first BOSM match. The biggest surprise was Princy scoring the final basket of the morning, in the last 80 seconds of the game, making SRCC the victors.
