Q: How has your experience been at BITS so far?
A: It’s been a pretty good experience. The vibe is nice, the people are nice and very respectful, which I think is the highlight for us.
Q: How did you come up with the name Sab Culture? Why did you change your name earlier?
A: Before this, we were called Hansraj Projekt, as we were in the same college together. We needed a band name as we used to participate in competitions and Hansraj Projekt was the name we came up with. As things moved along, we got a little serious about what we did, and didn’t want to continue with the same name. We changed it to Sab Culture with Sab referring to ‘everything’. We are trying to incorporate the Western and the Indian styles and fuse them together.
Q: Has your band been influenced by any artist in particular?
A: We’ve been influenced by a lot of artists to be honest – for example, Wolf Pack, Porcupine Tree, Advaita, and so on. Every member of the band has their own individual inspirations, and when we come together, it’s a whole different story.
Q: How long have you guys known each other? How did you meet and how did the band come together?
A: We’ve been together for five years now, having graduated two years ago. We were all in different years while at college, but somehow, we came together and things just went on from there.
Q: What inspired you to make music together?
A: We really enjoyed each other’s company, and even before our band came together, we were great friends.
Q: Where all has the band performed? Anything crazy you’ve seen on tour?
A: We’ve played at NIFT Delhi, OP Jindal, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, Strawberry Fields, and yeah, BITS Pilani. We party hard at all places we go to.
Q: What are the main themes of your song? How is the song-writing process like?
A: We don’t have any set theme as such. One of the members usually just comes up with something, and then everyone joins in and brings their own unique element to it.
Q: How has the band evolved over the years?
A: We’ve evolved as humans, we’ve learned a lot about music and about each other. To be honest, we’ve become more mature.
Q: Would the band like to acknowledge anyone who has given you any kind of support?
A: Our parents – they help us a lot, they’re extremely supportive.
Q: What do you think about the existing rock music scene and the notion that it seems to be fading away?
A: I feel the whole music community is shifting towards EDM music. It really sucks that good bands are slowly dying. Earlier, there was a different scene for bands – it was all organic. Now things are slowly getting more electronic. Bands like ours are finding it really tough to sustain, but we’ll stick to it and see how it goes.
