Mathematics Association

The APOGEE English Press spoke to the coordinator of the Mathematics Association, Nimit Jain, to understand more about the association’s work for APOGEE. The Mathematics Association’s primary objective is to promote the culture of mathematics and develop a strong bond between students and professors. Throughout the year, they organize workshops and events which aim to introduce participants to the world of mathematics.

This APOGEE, the association will be conducting their trademark event—‘Gambling Mathematics’. A fusion of mathematics and gambling, the event’s main aim is for participants to collect the maximum number of coins.

The event consists of three rounds—the first round will be conducted online and requires participants to solve questions based on mathematical concepts like algebra, calculus, and probability. With only twelve teams qualifying for it, the second round consists of games and challenges which allow teams to further increase their coins. In the third round, the final six teams get to play round-table mathematical poker.

Initially they had planned to conduct more events, but due to logistical constraints and timeline issues, they were unable to do so. With the introduction of a data science team in the association, they intended to host a data science workshop as well, but could not do so due to the lack of sponsorship. Nevertheless, they strive to include a data science-based event in the future. When asked about the most challenging aspect of planning for the fest, Nimit said that the initial ideation of the event and distribution of work was difficult. However, once planning started, it ran smoothly.

Preparations for the fest began as early as December and involved designing the rulesheet, formulating questions, devising the answer key and planning the event. Currently, with a few days left for the fest, Nimit revealed that they are finalizing the questions and the rules, and working on publicising the event as well.

Commenting on his experience collaborating with other clubs and departments, Nimit said that everything was handled in a smooth and professional manner. Additionally, he mentioned that the CoStAA had been extremely helpful and accommodating.

Nimit stated that his experience as a coordinator had been an enriching one. He added that although it could get hectic, it had been a wonderful learning experience for him. He urged BITSians to participate in as many events as possible and enjoy the fest. Most importantly, he hoped that the event would help participants realize that math is omnipresent and has multiple practical applications in everyday life.
