The Mime Club is responsible for keeping the comedy scene alive on campus. In the weeks leading up to Oasis, there is always work of some form happening round the clock. Despite such a tight schedule, Rushi Babaria, the coordinator of Mime Club, managed to take some time out to talk to the Oasis English Press.
The Mime Club is organising three events this Oasis- Open Mic, Improv Comedy and Pun Wars. Open Mic is designed to serve as a platform for people to showcase their skills in standup comedy, poetry, music, and other artforms. The broad spectrum of skills that it tests is what makes it unique. Improv Comedy, which is usually a group event, tests one’s ability to think on their feet and come up with acts based on a theme assigned to them on the spot. Pun Wars, on the other hand, is a more light-hearted event, wherein whoever is able to come up with the wittiest puns wins.
Apart from these three events, the Mime Club is also putting up regular stage acts, with a conscious effort to make these acts appeal to a wider audience, rather than going for more BITSian-centric themes. Light Balance, a special act, is also being performed by the club. With the use of programmable LEDs, the club hopes that their efforts to reflect the theme for this year’s Oasis, Neon Noir, will pay off.
Talking about how the club has evolved over the years, Rushi reflected on how the club, as a unit, is moving towards more editing-intensive filmmaking. Emphasis on original content has also increased, with an original piece being put out this year in place of the usual movie spoof. While speaking about his experience as coordinator, Rushi mentioned how the juniors have assumed a key role in maintaining the enthusiasm of the group, no matter how exhausting the practice sessions get.
On a parting note, Rushi had one message for all the BITSians, ‘Stick around till the end and enjoy the performances put up by the Mime Club; the best performances have been saved for last.’
