The Oasis English Press had a chat with Raghav Lahoty, coordinator of the Media Relations Club, regarding their role in Oasis. Their work entails covering the fest as a whole, including all of the important events, the prof shows and interviewing the chief guests. The articles produced are published in local Pilani newspapers such as Dainik Bhaskar and Dainik Jagran.
The club does not have a lot of preparatory work to be done in the weeks leading up to Oasis, since their work mostly entails journalism at the time of the fest. However, they do recruit juniors and instruct them appropriately on the process of writing the articles.
Raghav mentioned that the club did not face any challenges that hampered their fest preparation because their work was highly specific and there were relatively fewer contacts to be maintained. However, he did say that if more people knew about the club, they would get recognised for publicizing the fest outside of campus.
Raghav added that the club has been growing at a steady pace. While the journalism aspect has more or less remained the same, the club has started to conduct a few events in other fests and their numbers are increasing. He went on to say that during the pandemic-induced hiatus, the club went dormant which led to a few challenges for them, such as losing contact with several prominent newspapers. They haven’t reached their pre-pandemic levels yet, but slowly they will get there.
Raghav revealed that the juniors in the club were slightly nervous about the upcoming fest as it would be their first time conducting such high-profile interviews and writing articles. Raghav told us that this was very standard, and even their batch went through the same process.
When it came to the students of BITS, Raghav mentioned that he would like for people to be aware of what their club does. Most of their articles are published in Hindi, so the general BITSian may not be that aware of what their work entails.
