The concept of opposing forces clashing in a confluence of contrasts is as old as the abstract space of human consciousness it stems from. Time marches on inexorably, forcing change and portentousness with waves of its old, gnarled, and wise hands. Men evolve. Ideas evolve. The world evolves.
The eternal mystery and intrigue of life is an ever-present spectre in the back of the human psyche. Countless have, over the years, attempted to capture it in art, literature, culture, and technology; the most they have captured are glimpses out of the corner of the inner eye. One must wonder if it is a fruitless pursuit. Is the nature of life meant to be ever-elusive, forcing all to forever look over their shoulders lest they be overwhelmed by its presence?
Perhaps it is so. Then again, something is to be said for the dogged persistence of the human race. Many have spent their lives in search of the answer to the eternal question; many more have allowed themselves to be consumed by the quest. Yet, we persevere. We brave the light and the dark, the highs and the lows, and all obstacles that life sets before us in our adventure. Such has been the nature of life so far. As it has been, so may it forever turn out to be.
Why have contrast and conflict? Why change and differ? Why search and discover?
In the spirit of human perseverance, why not? The journey is different for all who choose to undertake the adventure of life. The meaning of life is as various as the human mind, with infinite capacity for change and difference. In such a world, it is only natural to be different. Embracing heterogeneity is key to discovering, affecting, and embracing change.
Then, why label? Why have a light for a dark, a new for an old, and a Neon for a Noir?
The human mind, infinite in its capacity, is nevertheless fragile. All ships, regardless of how mighty or weathered they may be, need an anchor. A tether to a common concept of contrast helps the mind refrain from losing bearing in the endless realm of possibility it carries within itself. It is also how two minds of unlike composition may communicate with each other; the relativity of common extremes is a language all can interpret.
Humanity has communicated its attempts at life through time as art and literature. No small matter it is, then, that themes of good and evil, light and dark, and new and old colour the pages of history. They evolve as we do. Inspired by life, they change in tandem with culture and science; in turn, so do they influence the very culture and science they germinate from.
Neon-Noir is but the next step in this evolution. The mystery hides within the light. It is an invitation to probe deeper. Where there is light, there will always be dark. Where there is new, there will always be old. Where there is Neon, there will always be Noir.
