National Service Scheme

The Oasis English Press met with Srijan Ingle, the Coordinator of the BITS Pilani chapter of the National Service Scheme (NSS), to learn about their preparations for the upcoming fest.

Srijan shared that throughout its history, NSS had conducted the Shop for a Smile event in Oasis. He explained that the event was aimed at recognising several NGOs and showcasing their handicrafts and craftsmanship. Each year, they set up stalls that sold handmade bags, stationary, jewellery, and condiments. He informed that the revenue generated was used to fund the operational costs of participating NGOs.

When questioned about the pre-fest responsibilities, Srijan stated that the pre-fest tasks primarily included contacting and coordinating with different NGOs. Participating NGOs often shared their catalogues, from which Srijan and his teammates choose the items to sell and their appropriate costing. He expressed that this task was usually hectic as the NGOs were often hesitant to collaborate, owing to their financial constraints and precarity.

Srijan shared that they worked alongside multiple other departments and  conveyed his gratitude to them, owing to their support throughout the preparation for the event. Srijan remarked that unlike other clubs, NSS had not been impacted by the budget constraints and the financial changes introduced by Students’ Union and remained hopeful of the event being conducted smoothly.

While sharing his journey as a Coordinator, Srijan commented that his experience as an active member of NSS has helped him manage the responsibilities he undertook as the Coordinator. He added that it was a very fulfilling experience, one which has been a great source of joy for him. Srijan concluded by sincerely requesting the students to visit their stalls and show support to local vendors and NGOs and recognize their efforts.
