Rajkumar Ji has been working at BITS for nearly 25 years now. He is an integral part of all fests conducted on campus, and he is especially involved in all events conducted in the main auditorium. The English Press Club sat down with him to discuss his work and life at BITS.
Rajkumar Ji currently works in the Instrumentation Unit where he is responsible for the repair of technical equipment in various labs. Additionally, he also assists with stage lighting for several events that take place in the main auditorium. This primarily entails adjusting the intensity and distribution of lighting to make the performances captivating and help the audience focus on the proper portions of the stage. He noted that his job is easier now than it was previously because the nature of the work had not changed substantially over the years. The Department of Lights assists him in his work in the auditorium as well.
Although he guides the students, he commented that they are already proficient at their job. He mentioned that it is a satisfying environment to be working in and emphasised how everyone is always ready to help each other. Besides that, he occasionally assists with operating the LCD projectors provided in each classroom.
Living in Pilani for the last forty years, he first started working at BITS in 1998 as a security guard. From 2001 onwards, he served as an attendant at the Public Relations office. Finally, he began working in the Instrumentation Unit in 2013 and continues to do the same today. He expressed that he is grateful to BITS for the financial assistance he receives for his children’s education and other modest aids such as medical support. He mentioned that the aid received from the institute was not affected by the pandemic.
He commented that over the years the campus has grown in every way. He highlighted that there have been tremendous improvements in salaries, infrastructure, and faculty. He recalled that there are few differences between the fests conducted in the past and fests today. He concluded by saying that BITS is like a second home to him and he enjoys working here.
