Tasked with the primary job of covering events and performances during fests on campus, the Photography Club, BITS Pilani – often referred to as Photog, is as an integral cog of the BOSM machinery. In an interview with the BOSM English Press, Vishvas Gupta, the coordinator, has shed some light on the plethora of events lined up for BOSM 2017.
‘Our work entails more than just covering the matches during BOSM. We also organise photography workshops for the BITSians and much more,’ says Vishvas. This year, gracing the workshop is Saurav Gandhi, an eminent photographer from Delhi. Following it is a hands-on practice session where the students are provided with DSLR cameras to try out different techniques in photography. They also conduct online photography contests such as “Capturact” and “Sports Ware”, where anyone can submit the photos they clicked during BOSM. These events involve photographs of split-second moments on the field and aesthetically pleasing photographs of sport equipment, respectively.
Having faced certain issues regarding the distribution of snaps of outstation students in the past, the club plans to upload all the images on a drive and share it with the participants this year. Commenting on the work structure of the club, Vishvas feels that there has been very little change in the recent past. However, he senses a major change in himself, which he owes to how his involvement with Photog shaped his personality.
Vishvas describes his interest in photography as a slow evolution over time, with the scales tipping towards intense passion only after joining the club. He fondly recalls many instances with his club seniors, from whom he believes he gained a lot of valuable insight regarding different genres and styles, with Street Photography being his favourite. In his own words, ‘It is the truest form of photography, where you capture emotions in transit.’ When asked to comment on his experience as a coordinator, Vishvas feels it’s a rather hectic job. Although he was aware of the responsibilities bestowed upon him while taking up the role, he admits that it’s a “little too much”.
As a concluding remark, he urged all the BITSians to explore their latent interest towards photography.
