Photography Club

With Oasis ‘24 just around the corner, the Oasis English Press sat down with Dev Shah, the Coordinator of the Photography Club (Photog), to gain insight into the club’s workings during the fest.

He explained that Photog was responsible for the coverage of the various events, ranging from Prof Shows like N2O to the stalls. In addition, Photog also hosted a gallery exhibition, featuring the various thematic photographs captured by the members.

Dev mentioned that the club would be conducting five events. He explained that Pixel was a free, registration-based online competition open to everybody. Participants would take photographs which were later judged. Capture Oasis, also to be conducted by the club this year, is similar to Pixel. However, the participants must take photographs of the fest instead. In addition to these, Galleria — an exhibition event — allowed club members to display photographs taken by them. Talking of paid events, Dev mentioned that Photog was organising Cyanotype, wherein students can bring their photographs and print them using cyan printing.  Another paid event to be conducted by Photog is Retro Camera, wherein students can purchase their own vintage camera and capture memorable moments of the fest with a vintage aesthetic. Finally, Photo Booth was a stall which allowed everyone to click photographs of themselves printed in a strip format — making for a unique keepsake, he added.

Dev shared that the challenges encountered were mostly logistical, such as arranging the sheets and liquids for the cyanotype printing, obtaining models for the photoshoots, and taking photographs for the panels. He highlighted that these issues were resolved quite easily, with certain equipment like clothing for the models arranged by contacting friends.

Talking of his team, Dev said that he took pride in their unanimous love for photography. Dev stressed upon the passion for photography among the members, ensuring that they find the work enjoyable rather than burdensome. Dev shared that Photog his love for the club had been present ever since his first year of joining the club.

On a final note, Dev encouraged the batch of 2024 to enjoy the fest as much as possible, visit the Galleria and Photo Booth Stall, and take part in cyanotype printing.
