The Renewable Energy club is hosting the event Protest out of Waste just as it had in the previous editions of Oasis. The event is an innovative one, centred on the idea of building models out of waste. Each team is provided with waste which they get from exchanging tokens, which are obtained based on the points the team gets in small events like a quiz organised by the club itself.
The event is loosely based on the proverb, ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’. The idea behind this event is to spread awareness about how junk thrown out can be utilised for creative purposes. The major source of the waste that the club collects and uses for the models is the All Night Canteen. The members of this club have set up baskets at ANC to collect bottles, paper cups and plastic plates which will be used for the event.
Many of the ideas used are ones out forward by the first year students. They look at how the environment is affected by students like ourselves, especially during activities like fests and how the adverse effects of this can be mitigated. The Club is also planning on building a structure this time, solely out of waste, to commemorate the theme of this year’s Oasis – “Of Gods and Men”.
The Coordinator, Kirti Singh, said that the work for the Renewable Energy Club has broadened her horizons and taught her a lot about things she did not previously know. To highlight one example, she said that the club work taught her about the waste generated during festival times like Diwali and the pollution that it causes. She said that the group talks and meetings that they had helped her to know the ideas put forward by the first years and their thoughts on renewable energy and waste management. This, in general, showed how people approach the problem for the need of renewable energy for future use. She hoped that the work of the club would reflect in the way the fest was conducted in the future and pave the way for a green Oasis.
