Roll Ball- Om Mahesh Kabra

Recently, the BOSM English Press caught up with the team captain of the Roll Ball team, Om Mahesh Kabra, to discuss the team’s journey as they prepare for the upcoming BITS Open Sports Meet (BOSM).

Roll ball is a fast-paced sport played on skates with handball-like rules that combines both, speed skating and a typical ball-scoring game.

According to Om, the team’s practices have been rigorous, running from 5 to 8 PM daily, with additional morning sessions on weekends. Skating drills occupy the first hour, followed by two hours of roll ball training. Talking about issues, Om shared that the slippery court due to rain had been their biggest challenge, apart from which they encountered no particular issues, neither with the organizers nor any other technical difficulties. As the sport is still emerging in India, the Roll Ball team lacks a formal coach and hence the team relies on YouTube videos for guidance.

Recounting past performances, the captain noted that the sport has only been played competitively for the past two years and that the BITSian team had secured a bronze and a silver medal.

Additionally, Om said their recruitment this year has been promising, with forty participants in the August trials, including many state and national players. Out of these applicants, they have recruited 6 boys and 4 girls. The captain reflected on his leadership experience: “It’s been tough, but rewarding, making me a better leader.” For him, roll ball is more than just a sport—it’s energizing and enjoyable.
