With BOSM round the corner, the BOSM English Press (BEP) sat down with the squash captain, Shubhranshu Dev Kodwani, to discuss the team’s preparation.
Played on a four-walled court, squash involves players hitting a small rubber ball against the front wall, aiming to make it bounce twice before the opponent can return it. Points are scored when the former doesn’t happen or the opposing player fails to return the ball. It mirrors the eleven-point and deuce system used in badminton and table tennis.
BOSM will feature both individual and team matches with a best-of-three structure, but during semifinals and finals, they extend to a best-of-five format. Shubhranshu mentioned that the team has been training with a coach, focusing on fitness and matches. They are divided into two groups, with the beginners having a time slot separate from that of others.
He shared that initially, the team faced some problems as the new recruits were a little irregular, but have since become regular. He remarked that since his first year, the game has gained popularity, and this year’s recruitments saw an ‘overflow’ of players. He remarked that they do not see any particular team as their rival, as the teams also keep changing.
He highlighted that the team is in good form and was placed second in the previous edition of BOSM. They feel good about their chances this year. Shubhranshu conveyed that his tenure as the captain has been great, as the previous captain has been very helpful. On a closing note, he expressed his enthusiasm for the fest and urged the students to try out squash.
