The BOSM English Press sat down with Parth Sikchi and Saniya Gadhave, the co-captains of BITS Pilani’s very own Ultimate Frisbee team, to discuss the team’s preparations for BOSM 2026.
Parth explained that most people thought of Frisbee as nothing more than a game where people toss a disc around, and that he, too, thought of it similarly before joining the team. Joining the team had changed his perception of the sport, which he noted required an extremely high degree of athleticism and coordination.
When asked about the rules of the sport, Parth elaborated that the ground would be divided into zones, and you could only score points if you caught the disc within the demarcated zones. The biggest constraint, however, was that one couldn’t move with a disc in hand.
Another interesting fact about Frisbee, according to Saniya, was that, unlike other sports, it was a ‘self-officiating’ sport. This meant that players on the field were solely responsible for maintaining the scores and calling out their own fouls or other infractions. She further added that it was one of the few mixed-gender sports played on campus, and threw in that it was officially known as ‘Ultimate Disc Throwing’ rather than Frisbee or Ultimate Frisbee, since the name ‘Frisbee’ was trademarked by the company that had first created the discs.
When inquired about how the preparation for BOSM 2026 had been going, Parth said that the team’s preparation so far was ‘pretty great’ due to them getting a coach for the semester, and that the team was in high spirits following the success of their workshop in August. The workshop had around 80 participants, which he considered a good number. The footfall of the workshop was significant since it served as the primary mode of recruitment for the team, where participants were taught everything they would need to know about the sport. He continued that commitment and potential were more important than performance in their workshop, and that Ultimate Frisbee wasn’t a very difficult sport to learn.
When questioned on the team’s performance in the previous edition of BOSM and their activities since then, Saniya stated that BOSM 2025 did not have any outstation teams for them to compete against, which led to them having to organise only intra-squad games for the fest. Since then, the team had participated in multiple tournaments, including the National College Ultimate Championship, which was the top flight of college-level Frisbee in India.
