The BOSM English Press sat down with Vaasvi Agrawal, the captain of the girls’ basketball team, for a quick chat about the team’s preparation for the upcoming sports fest.
Vaasvi insisted that the interview be held on the basketball court, promising it had nothing to do with the fact that the team, unlike in previous years, had enough members to actually be called a team. ‘In fact, there are more players than twelve, which is the maximum that can be registered for a single team,’ she remarked with a smug grin, explaining that their twenty-player team would be divided into Team A and Team B, with the latter also consisting of four additional alumni players.
She was keen to point out that, unlike the boys’ basketball team, their training sessions were quite regular. They practised for one hour in the morning and for two hours in the evening. Their team motto was ‘focus and discipline’, she explained solemnly, as the team filmed reels in the background during practice hours.
With BOSM approaching, Vaasvi commented that she was quite excited for the tournament. Alongside the usual 5v5 format, this year would probably also feature a 1v1 event, with around twelve to fifteen teams expected to participate. She remarked that she considered KMC, who had previously won gold during BOSM, as well as the DU colleges, specifically Hansraj, ‘for certain reasons’, to be their major rivals.
When asked about the team’s previous performance in BOSM and outstation tournaments, she refused to comment, and instead stated that she was confident that they would win this year. She attributed this to what she called their best team preparation yet, and also owed it to the fact that the new recruits were already skilled and the coach was very helpful.
Talking about her own journey, Vaasvi revealed that she had joined the basketball team because there was no horse riding team on campus. She had eventually become the captain, and although it was occasionally hectic, she explained that ‘with great responsibility came great power’, and that she was even able to ‘flunk practice for managerial stuff’, citing the ongoing interview as an example. On being asked about how she managed academics with sports, she stated that she would also like to know the answer to that question.
To conclude, she asked all BITSians to follow the team on their social media handles and show up to their matches. She also encouraged the student body to make use of certain chants and slogans that cannot be included in this publication.
