After a bit of persuading, Pavan Pillai, the coordinator of the Debating Society agrees to give us some time for an interview. He seems jaded after exchanging pleasantries. As we start to discuss the Society however, he seems to flip a switch, and there is a sudden buzz about him.
“The Oasis Debate, is one of two tournaments we organize during the year. The second one being Q.E.D.”, he starts. “The tournament follows a two on two Asian Parliamentary Debate format. Each debate concludes with an interrogation round where teams cross examine each other’s speeches.” He is optimistic about this year’s edition, and expects around twenty five teams to turn up for the same. “While BITSians aren’t allowed to participate (to eliminate bias), a great many turn up to watch every year, for the sheer quality of debate on display”, he asserts.
Pitching the tournament to a hundred colleges and attending to the needs of participants is a difficult task. This problem is compounded by the fact that members have commitments to their respective departments. That being said, Pavan is extremely grateful to a very passionate bunch of juniors who go above and beyond of what is expected from them.
So, what has his time with the Debating Society been like? “It has been an enjoyable experience. We usually participate in tournaments held in the Delhi Debating Circuit and the occasional one in Chandigarh. The debates get heated and everyone tries their best to defend their stance. I have gained a lot of perspective on different issues.”
Teaching juniors about the whims and fancies of debating has helped him better his skills at public speaking. There are also the lessons that come with responsibility, as when you happen to be in charge of tournaments as large as Q.E.D. “I have learned a lot from my time over here. Many others also share the same opinion”, he adds.
On the outset, preparations are in full swing and things are headed in the right direction. Pavan is confident about the success of the tournament.
Here’s hoping all their hard work and diligence comes to fruition.
