With Oasis 2023 just around the corner, the coordinator of the Coding Club, Saavi Deshpande, took some time out of her schedule to sit with the Oasis English Press and provide a glimpse of the Coding Club’s preparations for the upcoming fest.
Saavi detailed the events organised by the Coding Club this Oasis. The Coding Club will be organising a total of four events. Of these four, two are pre-fest events — a Hackathon and a Blender Workshop. One of the events to be held during the fest revolves around AI-generated images. Titled “AI Gallery”, it is the first time such an event will be held in an Oasis edition. The last event, PixelPlay, will be held at their VR stalls in the Krishna parking lot.
The Hackathon would be held continuously for 24 hours, with a prize pool of INR 30000 and free passes to all professional shows. Saavi mentioned that the Blender workshop would be perfect for students aspiring to learn more about video editing, wherein they would be taught how to make animations and infinite loops. AI Gallery would involve participants taking individual or group photos, and turning them into anime or movie characters, with the club providing print copies of these results. The VR game is based on a horror escape room, owing to the theme of this Oasis.
A difficulty that Saavi felt the club had encountered during their preparations was that this was the very first time the club was dealing with AR technology, but with group effort from all its members, it was easily taken care of. In the last edition of Oasis, the club launched the VR Game on its second day. Learning from this, the club had finished their preparations for this event well before the deadline this year.
Talking about her experience in the club, Saavi felt that the club had come a very long way — from having to attend online sessions during the pandemic where they couldn’t interact with their seniors much, to now having regular club meets on campus. Now, as the coordinator, Saavi felt that her work was not just limited to only a few verticals — as it was when she was a junior — but now involved working with and guiding juniors in all verticals of the club. She also thanked the StuCCA, who guided the club in important decision making processes.
Concluding the interview, Saavi invited the BITSian audience to all the events of the Coding Club and also to enjoy the upcoming fest.
