The India Quiz organised jointly by the English Language Activities Society and Nirmaan, was hosted by quizmaster Major Chandrakant Nair. The quiz, which was delayed by an hour saw participation of thirty teams of one to three members each. The preliminary round consisted of twenty-five questions from a variety of topics related to India including film, literature, history, and mythology. Deviating from the norm of having six or eight teams in the finals, Major Nair allowed the top nine teams to qualify due to a tie in the first round. The format of the finals was like that of Overhead Transmission, with four rounds – two themed written rounds and two infinite bounce-pounce rounds.
The theme of the first round was “Indian Women”. It was a written round with five questions. The first infinite bounce-pounce round saw the only outstation team consisting of Ashish Kumar Singh, Jayant Verma, and Sanjay Krishna gain a significant lead over the other finalists. The next written round had a unique theme – the first few letters of the answer were identical to the first few letters of an Indian state. In the last round of the quiz, the outstation team cemented their position at the top, while two teams tied for second. On the request of participants, the quizmaster conducted a sudden death tie-breaker where he asked the two teams to name the end stations of the longest commercial rail route in India. The team of Utsav, Devesh, and Rajas correctly answered Kanyakumari and Dibrugarh to finish second. Often, when the none of the teams were able to answer, Major Nair gave hints or revealed parts of the solution forcing the participants to deduce the answer. Overall, the quiz saw a decent turnout and was well-appreciated by all the participants.
