The APOGEE English Press sat down with Satwik Rath, the coordinator of the Karaoke Club, for some information regarding the upcoming fest. 

The Karaoke Club is organising two events this fest. The first event is a semesterly musical production called ‘Vibes’. It is a pre-APOGEE event happening on March 29, 2024. Like most performing clubs, this is a programme where the members will sing around 20 to 25 covers of songs over the span of two hours. Satwik added that all the tracks were curated by their production team and that they have tried to inculcate all genres of music.

This year, the Karaoke Club is also hosting a silent disco event for the first time. Satwik explained that it is the equivalent of a DJ playing, and people dancing with the music playing through headphones, hence the “silent” disco. Satwik mentioned that this idea was originally perceived to tackle noise pollution. He elaborated that the music will be divided into three major channels, amongst which the audience can switch. The DJ will play one channel, which would be the typical commercial music. The club’s own production team is designing another track. The third channel would be based on audience request; a mixtape will be created based on suggestions acquired by the public.

The club being fairly new, has just started pitching core events since last Oasis. Satwik revealed that the winner of the ‘DJ Battle’ competition conducted previously will be the DJ for the silent disco event this APOGEE. When asked about the preparations of the events, he mentioned that there were some scuffles regarding the budget estimation of rental headphones, which are substantially expensive. He further added that they eventually found an appropriate vendor who is an alumnus of BITS Pilani.

According to him, Satwik’s enthusiasm for singing initially prompted him to join the Karaoke Club. Within the club, he grew as a singer and realised the various perspectives to karaoke. As a coordinator, he mentioned that he is trying to provide a unique exposure that is appropriate for the production team. Satwik noted that being a coordinator has helped him develop his skills in organisation, negotiation, management and multitasking. He further added that this post had given him the exposure to the real world that he feels will significantly help him in his future endeavours. 

He estimated that the club usually spends fifteen hours a week for fest preparations. He remarked that though the club is new, it is gaining expeditious popularity and concluded by encouraging everyone to participate in the aforementioned events.
