Ultimate Frisbee – Sidharth Varghese

With the campus set to witness BOSM for the first time since 2019, the BOSM English Press interviewed the Captain of the Ultimate Frisbee team, Sidharth Varghese, to take a closer look at the team’s practice regime.

The team has been practising starting at 6 PM every day. The routine is broken up into two phases—warm-up followed by team games. For a sport that relies heavily on stamina, warm-ups help players avoid injury while exerting ‘explosive strength’ during games. An interesting takeaway from these games is that splitting the teams based on experience compels newer players to develop ‘a game-sense to be able to compete with better players.’ This strategy allows the team to hold their nerve in the realistic situation of facing off against a better team.

Further emphasising on their regime, Sidharth mentioned that team games are followed by what is called a ‘spirit-circle’. This post-game session involves each player giving constructive criticism to every other player; this allows them to capitalise on strong areas and work on weaker links. In Sidharth’s opinion, it has always been the job of the captain to work on every scope for improvement. Sidharth devotes personal attention to this end and helps players identify and persist with their style of play.

The team currently practises at the far end of GymG, in line with the hockey ground. Previously, they faced the issue of bad lighting, which to their relief, has now been resolved with the installation of new lights. Apart from this, they have faced the challenge of low participation, which they are looking to solve through multiple workshops spread across this semester. These workshops train applicants and shortlist them based on two key criterias, their ability to throw the disc and running skills. In further rounds, shortlisted players develop strength by targeting particular muscle groups and learning techniques. These techniques can be concerned with, for example, the types of throws, namely backhand and forehand.

Sidharth concluded on a positive note, noting that the sport will see improved participation in BOSM this year. He hoped to witness healthy competition and urged readers to enjoy the sporting events.
